Come read the (in)sane ramblings of a 20-something who has nothing better to do than (in)sanely ramble! There's also stuff about hermit crabs.

AN AWFULLY LONG TIME TO PUT UP WITH EACH OTHER!

Happy 30th Anniversary Mum and Dad!

They never make a big deal about it, so I thought I would. They’re still in New Zealand at the moment, where, funny enough, they spent their honeymoon thirty years ago. Maybe Dad is more of a romantic than we thought!

Anyway, I just wanted to contribute this poem that I wrote a lil while ago. Yes, I borrowed the title and some bits of the lines… but that’s what writers do! It’s an homage – both to the song of the same name and to my wonderful, loving, adventurous parents. Thank you for being who you are and for making us the individuals we are today.

The Special Two

When you’re young you have an image of your folks -
that they’re invincible and maybe even rule the world.
But then you grow into a person of your own
and you come to see them in a different light.
You’ll question all their principles and rules
and try to blame them for all your bad mistakes.
But in the end their intentions are the same –
they always want the best, the very best for you.
You’ll know it when you make peace with yourself
and learn to take responsibility.
You’ll see that they are human just like you
that they have flaws and face decisions every day.
So when you’re angry with the choices they have made
just be grateful someone’s there to take the weight.
Remember that they’ve been where you are being
and they’ve come through the other side, quite alright.
So take the time to recognise their sacrifice,
‘cause there’ll come a day when they’re not in your life.
Show them now how you really feel and think,
talk about the big things that you’re interested in.
Try your best to make their investment worthwhile,
but most important, always have a smile for them -
‘cause they’re the special two – Mum and Dad.
